During the days of the COVID-19 pandemic, when gatherings in enclosed spaces were restricted, many worshippers in the Old City of Beersheba, like in other parts of the country, moved to praying in courtyards and open spaces outside synagogues. Prayers were conducted under strict guidelines, including social distancing, wearing masks, and maintaining a limited number of participants according to the Ministry of Health’s regulations. For many, this was a way to continue community life and prayer, despite the challenges posed by the pandemic.
The courtyards provided a temporary solution, but for some worshippers, it was also an opportunity to feel closer to nature and the open sky during prayer. The prayers became a unique combination of the ancient tradition of communal worship with the modern challenges of health restrictions.
